Can Fern Stay? Chapter 2

"Are you hungry?" Sarah said to the puppy in the morning.  Fern yapped and nudged her bowl. "OK, that says it" Sarah laughed and filled it with 2 ribs.  Fern ripped it and ate it.  "Good morning," Dad said and kneeled down.  Fern jumped up and yipped.."Ooooo, these ribs are tastey."  Sarah laughed.

"It's time for some training!" Sarah said.  So they went outside.  "Okay," Sarah said, "I'll show you."  So she sat like a dog.  Then Sarah said, "Sit!" but Fern just rolled around.  It took half an hour, then Fern sat.
Then mom called Sarah for lunch.  "Okay, it's time for your lunch too, " Sarah said.

After lunch they did some more. "Sit!" Sarah said with a good mood and Fern sat!  "Good girl!" Sarah yelled and gave her a doggie treat.  "Dinner time!" Dad yelled.  "Okay!" And after dinner they went to bed.

"A Chihuahua!?" Sarah yelled.
"I saw it in the window of the shelter," Dad explained.
"Ahw", Mom said.
"I couldn't resist," Dad said.
"I got a basket and put an old cloth in it for ... we haven't named it yet!"Sarah said.
"Well for now..." Dad said.
"How about Fern?" Sarah said.
"Sure, I like that name."
"Let's play!
"EEK!" squeaked the puppy who backed away nervously.
"It's okay cutey", Sarah said, "Here!" She bounced a little ball to her.
"Oh, you want to play," The puppy said in dog language and jumped to her eagerly. Sarah didn't understand her language but she knew he wanted to play.

Swirl Squares

My mom makes these all the time!

1/2 cup Hard margarine (or butter.), softened
1/2 cup Brown sugar, packed
1/4 cup Granulated sugar
1/2 tsp. vanilla
1 large egg
1 1/8 cups All-purpose flour
1/2 tsp. Baking soda
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/2 cup Chopped walnuts
1 cup Semi-sweet chocolate chips

Beat first 5 ingredients in a large bowl until light and creamy.
Combine the flour, soda, and salt in a small bowl.  Add it to the margarine mixture. Stir till smooth.
Add walnuts.  Stir.  Spread evenly in greased 9 by 9 inch (22 by 22 cm.) pan.
Scatter chips over top.  Bake in 375F (190C) oven for 1 to 2 minutes until chips are very soft.  Remove from oven.  Swirl knife through the batter to create marble effect.  Return to oven.  Bake for about 20 minutes until firm and wooden pick comes out clean.  Let stand in pan on wire rack until cool.  Cuts into about 36 squares.

Instead of taking it out to make the marble pattern, my mom melts some chocolate chips to lightly pour over top once baked
